Case Study: The Effect of Age on the Quantity and Quality of Fresh Semen from Belgian Blue Bulls at BBIB Singosari
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyse the quantity and quality of fresh semen from Belgian Blue males at different ages. The sample consisted of a Belgian Blue male with records of fresh semen collection at 2, 3, 4, 6, and 7 years of age. The variables observed included sperm concentration, semen volume, pH, sperm motility, and sperm abnormalities. Data were statistically analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT). The results showed that sperm concentration, semen volume, and sperm motility differed significantly among ages (P < 0.05). The highest sperm concentration was observed at 4, 6, and 7 years of age, with values of 1,131.2, 1,147.9, and 1,152.6 million/mL, respectively. The highest semen volume was recorded at 6 years of age (5.51 mL), while the highest sperm motility was observed at 3 years of age (80.93%). In contrast, pH and sperm abnormalities did not differ significantly among ages (P > 0.05). It can be concluded that age affects the quantity and quality of fresh semen in Belgian Blue males. Sperm concentration increased progressively up to 7 years of age, while semen volume increased progressively up to 6 years of age. The highest sperm motility was observed at 3 years of age.
